Tomorrow will be a wasted practice if all we do is team offense vs. team defense. We need to split everyone into four groups and go over drills that would better help us in our gameday preparation than just knocking snot out of each other. Linemen need to work on their technique and fit drills (ALL linemen, O and D). Work on proper zone stepping will help with the OZ plays.
Quarterbacks should work with recievers going over routes and timing of passes. Work on proper throwing techniques as well as receivers timing their cuts are needed. DBs can go over these drills as well as working on their hip movement as well.
Runningbacks need to work on hitting the proper holes at the proper times and being able to read the backers to cut back. I have 2 drills that would help with awareness and speed boost.
Linebackers could work in with the line as the fit drills would need their assistance and help with their awareness on where the backs will cut.
We need to work these issues out. The biggest issue in last weeks game in my honest opinion was the play at the line. From this point on, there should be no defensive linemen subbing for the Oline but Offensive linemen subbing for D. Blitzes were not being picked up properly giving the qbs less time to get a deep pass out and backs not knowing who to follow the lead blocker to the hole. The play calling was not the issue. It was the lack of execution of those plays that hurt us the most.
Quarterbacks, no more quick snaps from the line. We need to give the line time to communicate where the blitz is coming from and how to protect it. Line, we need to communicate more on who is blocking whom. I will bring a sheet of simple calls we should all learn that would help with the blocking schemes where picking up the blitzes would be simpler. Running backs, we need to let the play develop before kicking it into 2nd gear. Know who your lead blocker is and get on their butts. Three 5yd gains is better than one 11yd gain. Receivers, know your routes. QB shouldnt have to explain where you are going on a play. The more time a qb takes explaining the play, the less time he has to read the defensive coverage.
Defense, in my opinion was SOLID last week. It was just an issue with too many guys going both ways (ecspecially the core interior) and the other team just took advatage of it. If you look at it, the defense has not been scored on a whole lot (other than the Knights game).
Too many guys are too injured on the squad right now to just go full out O vs D in practice. We will have a good game against Ada this weekend, we know what to expect and what looks they will give us. What we need to do is work on position specific drills so that we will be better prepared for later in the season. Not looking past our next opponent, these drills will help for this weekend too, but a traveling team is never as good as when you play them at home.
Just my .02 if anybody cares.
